I came across something interesting earlier, Duck Doom.  It's a cross between Duck Hunt and Doom.  I've been enjoying it.  The game can be found here.  There is also an article about the game and some interesting Duck Hunt mods, like a sniper rifle available here.

I haven't bought an nVidia video card in a long, long time.  At least not for my own computers.  Why?  Because I use dual displays on both of my main computers.  But nVidia supports that.  Yes, but their support used to be horrible.  As I've discovered this evening, that is no longer the case.

I came across an article in InfoWorld today that made me think.  It's about how all your beautiful programming and planning can fail when your procedures require human intervention.  I really hate to admit it, but a lot of the processes I've designed for my work's website are handled this way.  Not because I wanted to, but because I don't have the budget or manpower to redesign our systems to handle it properly.  It really annoys me somedays.

On a pleasant note, I've got Homestar's OS and drivers and such reinstalled.  I haven't gotten to the applications yet, except for PowerDVD.  But, I did get a driver installed that I apparently hadn't installed before.  Apparently the builtin Windows XP bluetooth support sucks.  I installed the Dell driver this time and it's actually working with the bluetooth headset I have.  It's really neat.  Hopefully, by the end of tomorrow, I'll have everything back to normal.

Some bad things got installed on the laptop, so I had a choice.  I could spend several hours getting it all cleaned off and working right again, or I could just do a format and reinstall that I'd been thinking about anyway.  I've decided to go with the latter option.  I think I've got everything backed up now, so it's time to start reinstalling windows.  Now I'll finally be rid of some of the crap that Dell installed on it before I got it.  (There's always a bright side.)

I just came across an interesting article from ArsTechnica about how Sun is thinking about releasing all of their source code, including Java, under an opensource license. This ought to really make Microsoft's day after all the java trouble they went through.

Don't know what came over me, but earlier I was thinking about how I should start using NAK in regular conversations. "In binary synchronous communication protocol, the NAK is used to indicate that an error was detected in the previously received block and that the receiver is ready to accept retransmission of that block." So it would go something like this:

*mumble* *mumble* *mumble*
NAK?
I said, "Are you going to go to the store today?"

I don't know what, but it really made me giggle.

Apple is moving to Intel CPUs. Scary, scary stuff.

In a stunning move, Steve Jobs announced that Apple will begin transitioning to Intel x86 CPUs in its computer products next year. Apple has been disappointed with the performance of the PowerPC 970, especially IBM's inability to deliver a 3.0GHz part. In addition, Apple has been hampered by heat and power issues, ruling out the possibility of a G5 PowerBook. As a result, the first Mac to ship with Intel Inside will be released by June 6, 2006, and the transition should be complete in 2007.

A few weeks ago, I installed a greylisting filter for sendmail on our email server. Greylisting causes an email from a new host and sender to be bounced the first time it comes through. After a set period of time, it will process. This adds a 15-30 minute delay on emails from people we don't receive items from very often, but it has dropped our spam load by about 90%. Between the greylisting and SpamAssassin, we get very little spam anymore.

The problem though, is my boss and I both get the feeling unconciously that we're not important some days because our email box doesn't have much in it. Without all the spam, we both stay pretty caught up on our email. It's weird.
